Thanks you so much for this helpful information! Took me a while to find it but I really appreciate the help. Have been suffering with this for many months and now I know what to do to, hopefully, get some relief.

I appreciate this website. I started out in November with a bad case of constipation that developed into a week long stomach ache and loss of appetite, followed by body ache and fatigue. The doctor at first thought I might have appendicitis, ordered blood tests and put me on Dexilant which I only took for a couple of days because I was afraid of the side effects. Then, I was mostly better for a couple of days when I developed a slight cough that continued to get worse. I took that to mean that all of my troubles were likely somekind of flu and this cough was a sign of that. I started medicating myself with flu and cough meds. My cough continued and I was agressive about using the flu meds, plus honey, plus lots of drinking and eating--anything to stop coughing! the next week I was coughing so hard and almost gagging that I went to a another doctor in the absence of mine and got some different meds. Codeine with cough syrup and a pellet to numb my throat. I took these for two days and then got worried that my throat was feeling worse--a lump and/or closing--and stopped taking these meds. By then my cough had eased up some so that it was tolerable. I kept having trouble especially at night and in the morning some real scary coughing, reflux, gagging spasm where I felt like I couldn't breathe. I would still cough in the day, but could make it through work. I went back to my doctor and she put me back on the Dexilent and wants me to take it for possibly eight weeks. I have been researching GERD ever since. I realize now that it runs in my family. I am scared what this could mean for me. I am a nutrition instructor and eat really healthy for the most part. I really, really appreciate this website. I must say, though, that there are many typing errors in this work. Would you like to know what they are?

Was wondering about dairy....especially milk n yogurt. Have been told by couple of people to avoid milk n yogurt when i have acid reflux symptoms. Is this true? And if yes, then what do you think about soy milk?

I have been diagnosed with GERD. I am experiencing the feeling of lump in the throat, constantly having to swallow as I have a feeling of something in my throat (trying not to clear my throat as they said stop) Hoarse voice and now feeling like sometimes wanting to gag. I had a scope of esophogus done and they say mine is fine except for a little sign of scarring. Do you have any other ideas, it is just getting worse it seems.

Thanks a lot for your comments. We will add a list of "GERD-unfriendly" food based on your feedback.

I would prefer a list of foods to consider as GERD-unfriendly, rather than having to read through all that prose. And I am unclear about whether avoiding all those culprits is primarily at the start of diagnosis and medication and can later be eased back or not. Doctors rarely take the time to tell you all that.
I also find that the symptom most common to me and three of my friends is the ticklish cough, never heartburn, yet this red flag symptom is rarely listed as a prominent consideration. I went a year and a half misdiagnosed as having idiopathic allergies, until I finally chose to see an ENT and got scoped.
